wednesday randoms, part 2

comments

I have been getting a lot of spam comments lately, about ten a day. Despite the fact that I hate filling them out myself when commenting on other blogs, I am going to have to put up word verification for a bit. Sorry to all of those that are annoyed by this but I am sick of having to delete comments with bad English telling me that they loved my "article" and to visit their brother's poker page. Really?

shopping online at the "mints"

At breakfast on Sunday, the Hubs said, "So I guess you finally bought a bra." (He was referring to the bra he had to superglue on Christmas Eve - another story for another time.)

I had not bought a bra but he said that there was a charge from Intimint for $19.99. We did a little research on Monday and found out that they had charged me for the last four months. I was livid. But apparently once you make a purchase through any of the "mint" sites (including Shoemint and Jewelmint,) you are then charged $19.99 each month since you have "activated your membership."

When I talked to the Customer Service representative she said that my order confirmation email would have had this information. I told her I never actually received this email (my inbox has a ridiculous amount of emails since I never delete anything like that.) She said that even if I never received it, it would have been stated before I made my purchase.

Although the $19.99 is stated on their website, it almost makes it sounds like their products start at $19.99. Anyways, they refunded me this month's money but not for the other three months. I am not entirely pissed off though because the last three months are not lost money - they are "credits" to future purchases. I just need to make sure that if I do make a purchase that I deactivate my account right afterwards so I don't get charged monthly again.

Just wanted to make sure everyone knew about this so it doesn't have happen to them. It is just so different from any of the flash sale sites I am a "member" of.

last week

. . . I totally let myself go. I only went to CrossFit once. And I ate and drank way too many things that were bad for me. And then I felt like crap.

This week will be different. Besides, I will be in a bathing suit in the Dominican Republic in a little over a month. That is now my motivation.

scandal

Scandal comes back in a little over a week. A LITTLE OVER A WEEK! I don't think I can wait any longer!

paleo sausage and sweet potato casserole

I made this recipe from PaleOMG two weeks ago and it was delicious! I ate it all week for breakfast and thought about making it again this week but I didn't want to eat it so much that I get sick of it.

I love making casseroles. They are great for when you have company but they are also nice to make at the beginning of a work week to have an instant breakfast every morning. I decided to make a casserole on Sunday and I found myself using the same ingredients as the recipe from PaleOMG. I guess my tummy just really needed my sausage, sweet potato, and spinach fix. However, this tastes pretty different to me.

This is so easy and you can certainly substitute different meat or vegetables depending on what you like. It is the perfect way to start your day and it makes me want to eat well all day long.
PALEO SAUSAGE AND SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE
serves 4-5

1 lb. Italian pork sausage
1 small sweet potato, diced
1 small onion, diced
salt and pepper
3 large handfuls of spinach
8 eggs
2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. ground paprika

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

Crumble sausage into large skillet and cook until no longer pink. Remove from pan and put in large bowl to cool.

Using leftover pork fat, add potato and onion to skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook for about five minutes. (If extra fat is needed, add a bit of olive oil before added the veggies.) Cover to cook potatoes all the way through. Add spinach and let wilt.

Add to large bowl and mix with sausage. Allow to cool for a bit.

Meanwhile, beat eggs in a separate bowl. Add garlic powder and paprika and mix in. Add to large bowl with meat and veggies. Mix well.  Spread into 9x13 casserole dish. Bake in oven for about 25 minutes or until center is cooked through.

Enjoy!

monday giveaway: beefree

Today's giveaway is from BeeFree which is a gluten-free bakery that sells delicious cookies, cakes, and cereals as well as flour products. There are a few paleo friendly items too. They sent me a BeeFree Tasting box to try out.
I got two different types of Warrior Cereal, one original and one chocolate. I liked that the original had a salty flavor while the chocolate had a dark chocolate taste that was not overly sweet. I actually plan to keep these in my desk to munch on when I am hungry at work so I don't stop by my coworkers candy bin (which I have been doing way too much lately.)

I also received a snickerdoodle, a chocolate krinkle cookie, and a vegan cowboy cookie. By far my favorite was the snicker doodle - maybe because I really like them in general. My stepmom makes some really good snickerdoodles and this was just as good. I could not tell that it was gluten-free.
The John Lemon Cake was awesome! It was actually really hard to stop eating it. So I don't eat the entire thing, I think I will share some with my coworkers.

BeeFree is giving away one BeeFree Tasting Box to one lucky reader! Please use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. (Entries left in the comment section of this post are not valid to win.) A winner will be chosen at random.

a new look from sweet tea paperie

I am so excited for my new blog design from Sweet Tea Paperie! I knew I wanted a change but I wasn't quite sure what direction to go in. Amanda was so incredibly helpful and took my random thoughts and created a design that I am in love with.

The above image is the inspiration board that she sent me after I filled out an extensive questionnaire. After we discussed the board, she created a dummy site with my features on it. We really didn't have to do much tweaking from there.

If you are thinking about a new blog design, I highly recommend Amanda!

style inspiration: olivia pope

I am totally obsessed with the television show, Scandal. The Hubs has been watching since first season but I just started recently. The show follows former White House communications director turned DC "fixer," Olivia Pope. She works to fix prominent people's problems and keep their secrets out of the media. Oh, and she "doesn't believe in crying." But you soon find out the woman who seems so put-together has a personal life that is anything but. She has secrets of her own, including an affair with a married man - the President of the United States.

And, although the plot twists and imperfect characters keep the show interesting, sometimes the scenes are stolen by Olivia's wardrobe.

I love that Lyn Paolo, the costume designer for Scandal, chooses to the reuse pieces in different episodes - much like a "normal" person's wardrobe. And yes, Olivia's closet is full of pieces from Escada, Micheal Kors, and Ralph Lauren but the girl-on-a-budget can absolutely take some of the pages from Olivia's style book and make it her own:

- We tend to find Olivia in pastel colors but obviously this will not work for everyone. The key is to find tones that work with your skin color.
- Olivia rocks the "power pant." Find pairs that fit your frame and put on your man pants.
- She has amazing jackets and lot of them are very unique. It is obviously good to have the basic blazers in your wardrobe but find one or two "different" jackets that will make you stand out.
- Big statement necklaces are all the rage but Olivia is almost always wearing long simple necklaces. She doesn't pile on accessories but she almost always has a watch and a great bag.

Do you have any onscreen style crushes?

My weekend started early since I took off from work on Friday. Thursday night, I skipped CrossFit and the Hubs took me to get Mexican and margaritas for my birthday. After that, we caught up on Banshee which is a new show we have started watching.

Friday morning, the Hubs left early for a trip and I got up and went to get a manicure and pedicure. After grabbing some lunch at home, I headed to the grocery store and cleaned up the house a bit. That evening, I went to CrossFit and then ordered some Thai food. I then watched all the episodes of The Americans. It is definitely a great new show.

Saturday, I skipped CrossFit since I had hurt my back the day before. Niki came into town and we had lunch and drinks at Public House. After lunch, we went to the other side of the brewery to check out the tasting room and try a few beers. Then we decided the rest of our day was going to be comfy and relaxing so we came home, got into comfy clothes, and watched a few episodes of Girls. After we ran out for ice cream for later, we made dinner and watched almost the entire first season of Scandal while drinking champagne. I had only started watching during second season so it was nice to see how it started.

This morning, we went to breakfast at our local diner. Then Niki went home and I did a few things around the house. I had my last sewing class today but I think I will probably take the second beginner class. After class, I went to yoga.

How was your weekend?
